Villa Taman Surga Bali Set in the midst of a magnificent tropical
garden, the Villa Taman Sorga Bali is an inspired vision of grand
opulence; one man’s manifestation of the Bali dream. Situated in Sanur,
the impact of this seven-bedroom island residence is immediate. Completed
in 1997, its architecture succeeds in creating an ambience of luxuriant
grandness, while demonstrating a sensitive appreciation of local culture.
Contained within a high wall that ensures total security and
privacy, the Villa Taman Sorga Bali compound is a collection of six
different structures. Starting from the entrance, with an enclosed carpark
large enough to hold several vehicles, is the main house to one side, with
a wantilian (a Balinese ceremonial pavilion used for performances) on the
other. Further back, on the other side of a lush garden, lies the guest
wing, the dining pavilion, and the adjoining staff quarters (which have
their own entrance).
The exotic allure of this tranquil haven is
further enhanced by the delicately landscaped grounds holding a large
free-form swimming pool, ponds, water fountains, and an enclosure
containing a family of native monkeys and tropical birds. An almost
obsessive attention to detail is evident throughout the grounds and
interiors. The furnishings and decorations are the culmination of years of
collecting by the owner. A panoply of antiques, traditional stone
carvings, ornate woodcarvings, Persian rugs, ikats, and Balinese shadow
puppets, are just some of the decorative elements on display throughout
the various buildings.

Accommodation
The main house is a two-story building, roofed in alang-alang (thatch),
comprising four bedrooms, a wrap around terrace on the second floor, an
outside living room on the ground floor, and a small study.
On the
second floor is the master bedroom, hosting a pair of four-poster
queen-sized beds ensconced between two intricately carved and colorfully
painted antique bales. The room features air-conditioning, as do all the
other bedrooms on the property. Opening on two sides through large
louvered doors onto a massive wraparound wooden terrace, one finds a
carved Balinese daybed along with a hammock, providing an excellent view
of the garden and the remainder of the compound. This huge master bedroom
also features an ensuite bathroom dressed in shades of cream and floored
in Javanese marble. Here, a large glass walled walk-in shower compliments
the marbled double sinks and a hand carved mirror from Thailand, while at
the back, steps lead up into a large sunken bathtub. Off the adjacent
hallway which is decorated with a large stained glass window and a
colonial chandelier, is a children’s/nanny’s room that contains a single
bed and a children’s crib.
A wooden stairway descends downstairs
to the main floor where we find the master suite with a magnificent
queen-sized antique four-poster bed, topped with a mosquito net
canopy. In contrast to the neutral tones of the walls are the wooden
floor, dark wood antique furnishings, and a large red upholstered sofa. A
double door off the master suite leads to the magnificent ensuite
bathroom. Dressed in shades of cream and capped with an unusual arched
smoked glass roof, it has marble floors and double sink units. At one end,
an archway opens into a walk-in circular shaped shower, whilst at the
opposite end, a distinctive antique door separates the washroom from the
rest of the bathroom.
At the bottom of the stairs leading to the
second floor, is the alcove bedroom featuring a queen-sized bed with a
bathroom alongside. Next to this, is a small auxiliary kitchen. The ground
floor also contains a delicately furnished living room with wooden floors,
and ceilings hosting limestone columns and light yellow walls that are
open to the garden on two sides. A glass paneled door opens from the
lounge area into the air-conditioned wood paneled study with its large
windows looking onto the garden.
Not far from the main house,
lying close to the entrance of the property is the wantilan. The high
arched alang-alang roof supported by large carved columns covers a large
area that provides a superb venue for staging shows of Balinese
traditional dance or merely as a place for enjoying a view of the grounds.
Villa Taman Sorga Bali features an extensive garden with lush
foliage comprising diverse types of tropical flowers and shrubs, including
the regal Traveler’s Palms. Providing small havens of shade and solitude,
several bales (Balinese gazebos) are scattered throughout the grounds. Off
to one side, a stone barbecue is situated for dining and/or entertaining
outside. Rambling pathways wend through the small ponds and waterfalls
knitting the diverse parts of the compound into a collective whole. On the
other side of the garden and over a small wooden bridge, spanning the
middle of a seventeen-meter swimming pool, lies the dining pavilion and
guest wing, a ‘C’ shaped building which surrounds a courtyard.
The
dining pavilion consists of two parts. One is an open informal dining area
accessed by a short series of steps from the garden, and open on three
sides to the outdoors. This area has a high pitched ceiling featuring
intricate bindings holding the alang-alang in place, allowing for a
panoramic view of the garden. It also contains Thai style cushioned
day-loungers placed around a low antique table surrounded by traditional
carvings from the Indonesia archipelago. Further back in an adjoining room
graced with large windows rests the formal dining room. A long antique
dining table capable of seating twelve is the centerpiece, with antiques
and Balinese shadow puppets serving as a backdrop. From the dining room, a
carved wooden door leads to a covered walkway, leading to a pantry and the
modern, well equipped main kitchen.
The adjacent guest wing
surrounds a courtyard on three sides. The central area is a lounge area
with rough gray stone walls, holding arched windows and decorated with
Balinese shadow puppets. Two cushioned and covered bamboo couches rest
around a low glass coffee table on the subdued red terrazzo living room. A
third sofa in a cream color, and Balinese daybed, complete the setting.
To one side is a doorway opening into the pitched alang-alang roof
of the master guestroom with its double bed, large low windows, and wood
furnishings. It possesses an ensuite bathroom dressed in cream marble and
smoked glass, featuring another beautifully carved wooden archway leading
to the shower. Also adjoining the master guestroom is a combination
private lounge and dressing room, opening onto a small tiled terrace with
three bamboo and wicker lounge chairs overlooking the courtyard. The
dressing room possesses two sofas, and a freestanding wardrobe.
On
the other side of the courtyard, three small arched doorways lead to the
two other guestrooms and a bathroom. The two bedrooms are approximately
the same size but distinct in decoration. One features twin single beds
and the other a queen-sized double bed, both with mosquito net canopies.
The guestroom at the end of the wing has sliding doors leading out on to a
small terrace that looks onto the pool. Each contain wooden standing
antique wardrobes and dressers, with carved doors opening onto the shared
ensuite bathroom. An off-white and blue marble floor continues up to a
marble bathtub in the corner, and a shower framed by a colorful terrazzo
arch.
Villa Taman Sorga’s architecture and decorations bespeak the
property’s heritage of Western and Balinese influences. The tropical
location of the compound is evident with every view of the villa’s lush
and carefully crafted garden. With its spacious nature and luxurious
finish, this compound is ideally suited for hosting large groups of family
or friends, who want to experience the best that Bali can provide.
